About the Work
“The desert exudes a profound sense of timelessness… a threshold between life and death.”
About Nachtmeer
Cornelia Pierce's abstract moon-drenched views of the Arizona desert are entangled with a sense of liminality. They conjure spaces and geologies that, on the surface, present as familiar. However, as we pass through sequential views within the world she crafts, we begin to see that the terrain is interior, and what presents as the exterior is thwarted by the deep psychological lode within the images. Nothing is fixed, and things become less familiar the more we engage with the artist and her works on repeat.
"The desert exudes a profound sense of timelessness. Within this landscape, dreams seem to be of a different texture, more vivid, often paired with an element of dread. Over the years, I embarked on a quest for a deeper understanding of the desert's essence, its aesthetic, textural, and psychological intricacies. The symbolic resonance, akin to the spiritual nourishment of the land’s ancestors, inspired a personal journey within myself. Twilight emerged as my steadfast companion, unveiling a portal to a liminal realm, a threshold between life and death."
The work is most fully realized when experienced alongside its accompanying soundtrack, amplifying the ethereal and shifting nature of the work.
